The existing animal hospital in Wellington was in a desperate state. The flow internally was not harmonious, the growing veterinary required more clinical area as well as a larger shop for clients to purchase goods whilst visiting. The design proposed enclosing an existing courtyard and adding an area of 220m2 to allow for a new reception, shop and waiting area. The internal spaces have been reshuffled to allow for an easier flow as well as separating the public from the private. The building has been reroofed and a large glazed facade allows for a more contemporary design as well as allowing light into the reception area. The roof over the now enclosed courtyard is raised to allow for high windows allowing for enough natural light to enter the heart of the building which is the theatre. The high ceiling adds to the spatial quality and frameless glass divides the internal space. The brief asked for a meeting area and a recreation area for its staff. This has also been incorporated in the addition and is centred around a bulky braai. An industrial feel is given to the interior with exposed concrete beams, exposed steel as well as timber rafters. The existing animal hospital in Wellington was in dire need of renovation. Internally, the flow was chaotic, and the expanding veterinary practice required additional clinical space and a larger retail area for clients. The proposed design addressed these needs by enclosing an existing courtyard and adding 220m2 to accommodate a new reception, shop, and waiting area. Internal spaces were reorganized to improve circulation and separate public and private areas.
The building underwent reroofing, and a large glazed facade was introduced to modernize the design and allow natural light into the reception area. The raised roof over the enclosed courtyard features high windows, flooding the central theatre space with light. Frameless glass partitions enhance the sense of space.
The brief also called for staff meeting and recreation areas, which were incorporated into the addition, cantered around a substantial barbecue. The interior design features an industrial aesthetic with exposed concrete beams, steel elements, and timber rafters. Overall, the design seeks to uplift the spirits of occupants and create a welcoming environment.
