At Arch on Main, we believe great architecture responds to both place and purpose. As an architect in Wellington, our work often takes us across the Western Cape, designing spaces that embrace their surroundings while solving complex site challenges.
Our collaboration at Dwarsberg Trout Hideaway in Rawsonville is a perfect example of this approach.
Set against a dramatic mountain backdrop, this project transformed an undeveloped piece of land into a collection of luxury pod units that offer guests a unique and immersive nature experience.
Reimagining Luxury Accommodation in the Cape Winelands
Dwarsberg Trout Hideaway has long been known for its rustic charm, wedding venue, and scenic campsite. As visitor expectations evolved, the owners identified an opportunity to introduce premium accommodation that would elevate the guest experience while preserving the tranquillity of the site.
The vision was clear: create luxury pod accommodation that blends seamlessly with the landscape and offers guests uninterrupted views of the surrounding mountains.
However, achieving this vision required innovative architectural thinking.
The Design Challenges
As architects based in Wellington, we understand the unique conditions often presented by rural and mountainous sites throughout the Cape Winelands.
Several factors influenced the design process:
- Remote access via a dirt pass road limited the transportation of materials and construction equipment.
- The designated site was located on a steep slope with challenging topography.
- Construction needed to minimise disruption to the natural environment.
- The new accommodation had to complement the existing character of the hideaway.
Rather than viewing these constraints as obstacles, we used them as opportunities to develop a more efficient and sustainable solution.
Why Light Steel Frame Construction Was the Ideal Solution
The pod units were designed using a light steel framework, enabling faster construction, reduced site impact, and greater design flexibility.
Unlike conventional container structures, the light steel system allowed us to move beyond simple rectangular forms while maintaining a sleek, contemporary aesthetic.
The benefits included:
- Reduced construction timelines, with each unit completed within six to eight weeks.
- Lighter foundations that minimised excavation and earthworks.
- Improved adaptability to the steep terrain.
- Lower transportation costs due to prefabricated components.
- Enhanced long-term durability and sustainability.
Timber flooring and elevated substructures further reduced the project’s environmental footprint by working with the natural contours rather than against them.
A Collaborative Design Process
Exceptional projects are built through collaboration.
This development brought together a talented team of designers, engineers, and specialists who shared a common vision of creating a luxury retreat that feels connected to nature.
Architectural design was led by Nikita van Zyl of ModH Design, while Frame Consulting Engineers ensured the structural integrity of the pod units.
Construction was managed by SPAAS in collaboration with Green Way Interiors, with interior design by Kim Spyron of Oooh Inspired Design.
Landscape designer Jan Hagen played a key role in integrating the development into its surroundings through indigenous planting and natural pools that enhance the site’s existing beauty.
Designing for Connection with Nature
Every aspect of the project was designed to strengthen the relationship between guests and the landscape.
Large openings frame mountain views, interiors flow effortlessly into outdoor spaces, and indigenous landscaping creates a sense of belonging within the environment.
The result is a retreat that offers comfort, privacy, and a deeper connection to nature.
